The more effort it takes to pick a lock, the more attention the thief will attract. The position of the bike is also crucial; it's best to park your treasure in busy corners that can be seen. The many different shapes, lengths, colors and designs, allow for every use the appropriate security. Basically, we recommend a lock that costs about 50-100 € and has a high security level.

The classic chain and cable lock

The price and the uncomplicated handling of the classic chain and cable locks, make these the first choice for most bikers. From the child-friendly lock in colorful optics, to the professional Abus lock-chain combination with security level 15, many different options can be found. The type of lock can also vary. For most locks, a variant with combination lock and a variant with key are available. The cable locks are still somewhat easier to use and lighter, but at the same time offer a maximum of security level 6. Modern chain locks are, especially in direct comparison with folding locks, much more flexible and can also be easily locked to a tree, or the next lantern. The square chains used, the modern lock bodies and lock cylinders, effectively deter most thieves from their intentions. All locks are surrounded by a soft casing, which prevents scratching of the frame. The flexibility of the chain and cable locks, as well as their different lengths, make them real all-rounders, which are quite suitable for securing more expensive bikes.

Folding and U-locks for more security

Folding locks have enjoyed growing popularity in recent years. The massive joints and extremely robust struts made of specially hardened steel are almost insurmountable. The locks can be compactly folded and easily attached to the frame by means of a small bag or stowed in a backpack. With a length of up to 120 cm, they are also suitable for securing if there is no bicycle stand in sight. The folding locks are also available with a key or combination lock. Smart additional features, such as a built-in alarm system, or the possibility of ordering several locks keyed alike, offer the optimal solution for every case. Thanks to modern manufacturing processes, these locks are also significantly lighter than they were a few years ago. Between 830 grams and a little more than a kilo should not be too much for the safety of the bike. Thanks to the sheathing of the struts with a multilayer plastic, the frame is not scratched even during rough use. The superior quality of these locks made of stainless steel, the specially secured locking mechanisms and easy transport, make the folding locks currently the most attractive option! Who calls a particularly valuable bike his own and reliably has his stand, or the bike garage available in the relevant locations, can also choose a U-lock. These locks are - provided a certain quality of workmanship - considered theoretically unbreakable and extremely deterrent to thieves. The extra hardened steel, the double locking of the shackle, as well as specially coded keys, make a U-lock a high-security system. Extremely practical features, such as an LED illuminated key or an automatic keyhole cover, add to the functionality. Here, too, it is possible to order different locks with the same key.

Which bicycle locks do the police recommend?

The police usually recommend using a bicycle lock that complies with the Sold Secure standard. This standard is managed by an independent organization in the UK and ensures that the lock meets a certain level of security. A bike lock that meets the Sold Secure standard is usually considered secure and offers good protection against theft. However, it is important to note that no bike lock is completely theft-proof. It is always best to store the bike in a safe place and use the lock thoroughly.

What is the best way to lock your bike?

  1. Choose a safe place to lock the bike. A good place is, for example, a bike rack where many other bikes are already secured.
  2. Use a bicycle lock that complies with the Sold Secure standard.
  3. Lock the bike lock around the frame tube of the bike and a fixed object such as a bike stand. Avoid closing the lock only around a wheel or a saddle, as these parts can be easily removed.
  4. Use the bike lock correctly by passing the lock through all open lock holes and squeezing it tightly. Avoid overstretching the lock, as this can make it easier to break.
  5. Test the lock by trying to move the bike or remove the lock while it is closed. If you cannot move the bike or remove the lock, it is well secured.

It is important to note that no bicycle lock is completely theft-proof. It is always best to store the bike in a safe place and use the lock thoroughly.

Which bikes are most often stolen?

It is difficult to say which bicycles are most frequently stolen, as there is no reliable data on this. The frequency with which a bicycle is stolen depends on a number of factors, such as the value of the bicycle, where it is stored, and how often the bicycle is used. However, high-value bicycles that are frequently parked in unsecured areas are likely to be at higher risk of being stolen. To reduce the risk of bicycle theft, it is important to store the bicycle in a secure location and use a secure bicycle lock.

Where do I dispose of my bicycle lock?

As a rule, bicycle locks can be disposed of in the trash can for metal and electronics. These garbage cans are usually located at landfills or recycling centers. You can also check with your local trash department to find out how bike locks should be disposed of. In some cases, the bike lock can also be taken to a bike store or garage that will collect it for the recycling process. It is important to dispose of bicycle locks properly to protect the environment and conserve resources.

What length should a bicycle lock have?

The length of a bicycle lock depends on several factors, such as the type of lock, the bicycle and where it is stored. However, experts usually recommend using a bike lock that is long enough to lock the bike around a fixed object such as a bike stand or lamppost. This allows the bike to be thoroughly secured and makes it more difficult for thieves to steal the bike. The length of a bike lock can be adjusted as needed by looping the lock around the object or using additional lock extensions.

What can I do if my bike lock won't open?

If the bike lock won't open, there are a few steps you can try. First, you should try to force the lock open by bracing your own bike against a solid wall or other sturdy object and then using all your strength to turn the lock. If that doesn't work, you can try oiling the lock to see if that releases the lock. If that still doesn't work, you can try heating the lock, such as with a hair dryer or a flame. Again, the heat may help loosen the lock. If none of these methods work, you can try seeing a bike lock specialist who may be able to help you.

What are the different types of bicycle locks?

There are many different types of bicycle locks that vary in design, size, and level of protection. Some of the most common types of bicycle locks are:

  • Cable locks: These locks consist of a flexible steel cable that can be easily looped around the bike. They offer a low level of protection and are best suited for short parking periods.
  • U-locks: These locks have a U-shaped steel bar that loops around the bike and a fixed object. They are slightly more secure than cable locks and are suitable for medium parking time.
  • Folding locks: These locks consist of several short steel bars that can be folded for easy transport. They provide medium protection and are suitable for medium to long parking periods.
  • Chain locks: These locks consist of a steel chain that can be looped around the bike and a fixed object. They are very secure, but also heavy and bulky, so they are best suited for longer periods of parking.
  • Frame locks: These locks have a U-shaped steel bar that can be looped around the bike and a fixed object. They are very secure and are suitable for longer parking time.

Are there bicycle locks with alarm function?

Yes, there are bicycle locks with alarm. These locks are equipped with a motion sensor and an alarm system that sounds a loud alarm if someone tries to tamper with or break the lock. These locks can provide added security and help reduce the risk of bicycle theft. However, they tend to be more expensive than traditional bike locks and can still be overcome by experienced thieves. It is therefore important that you always choose a secure lock and use it carefully to minimize the risk of theft.

What are the brands of bicycle locks?

Lightweight bike locks

A lightweight bike lock is one that is light in weight and easy to transport. This can be especially useful if you need to transport the bike frequently, for example when boarding public transportation or when storing the bike in a small closet. There are different types of lightweight bike locks, such as folding locks or cable locks. Note, however, that lightweight locks are generally less secure than heavy locks and are therefore better suited for short periods of parking. If you are going to leave the bike for a longer period of time, you should choose a secure lock, even if it is heavier.
